A recent outbreak of gastrointestinal illness at my son's daycare and subsequently at my house, brought to light a common confusion between the flu (influenza) and what is commonly called 'stomach flu' (gastroenteritis, commonly caused by norovirus). People are also often confused between the common cold and influenza. The following table gives some basic guidelines to help differentiate between them. As you can see, the stomach 'flu' is very different from influenza. Knowing this, you can treat them differently. Hopefully this brief post has helped you to understand these common ailments.

We needed to use up some green tomatoes at the end of the season. This recipe turned out well as a healthy option. Recipe:
2 c. chopped green tomatoes 1/4 c. oil (we like grapeseed) 1/3 c. honey 1 c. milk 2 c. whole wheat flour 1 T. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 egg Combine dry ingredients. Beat egg and then other wet ingredients and add to dry. Stir enough to moisten batter. Bake at 400 F for approx 25 mins. Makes 12 muffins. Adapted from The Practical Produce Cookbook |
